On Saturday 7/15, I did my first snorkeling for fish. Went to Cummin's Creek which is one of the few bodies of water in the area clear enough to have reasonable visibility. Underwater I saw:
Gizzard Shad -- adults zooming by
Schools of 50 Sand Shiner around my face
Several Central Stoneroller
Blacktail Shiner
one River Carpsucker
Huge Black Bass checking me out.
A few redear sunfish
Many longear sunfish
Many redbreast sunfish
A probable adult blue catfish let me come up and touch it.
A couple dusky darters
4+ bigscale logperch in a school on a gravel bottom. I had never caught them before in the area. And this is more in one view than my grand total of three I've ever collected. I decided to come back later with my cast net. I cast netted many times and caught lots of fish but no logperch. Went back in with face mask and they were still there. Tried the dip net. No luck. Tried swimming underwater trying to coax them into a net. Went home without having caught one. They were beautiful. Amazing experience.
On Sunday 7/16 I visited Big Creek and the Trinity River. In Big Creek @ Rt 222 I found:
Scaly Sand Darter. Only my 2nd collection
Found my first blackspotted topminnows. Found many of them. At least that's my ID. Tell me if I'm wrong.
A small Lake Chubsucker. Only my 3rd collection of this species.
At the Trinity just below Lake Livingston I found:
Several Black Bass. I'm wanting to call these Spotted Bass.
Several Yellow Bass.
A fisherman didn't know what to do with his fine catch of Longnose Gar and Smallmouth Buffalo, so dumped them in the parking area to rot:
Another longnose gar carcass
A dead Alligator Gar. Only my 2nd dead specimen. I've never found a live one.
