SMALLMOUTH BUFFALO Ictiobus bubalus
This hunchbacked sucker was most likely the source of the name
for Buffalo Bayou, but noone knows for sure since the mammalian
buffalo also historically occurred in the general area. They
would be described as not uncommon. I've only caught two in
Buffalo Bayou. Both were large and heavy, and approaching two
feet in length. Both were caught with a cast net. In the San
Bernard River just below Attwater Prairie Chicken Refuge, I've
found a persistent large school of adults can be found and
readily seen because of the clear water in the area.
